MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS FROM VICKIE WAGNER, MUSIC DIRECTOR

In honor of Good Shepherd Sunday, this week’s posts will focus on various settings of Psalm 23.  Here is one by English composer John Rutter, beautifully sung by the Atlanta Master Singers.

If you’d like to hear the composer’s own commentary about this piece, which is a movement from his Requiem, you might also enjoy this video.

Here is a video of the Choir of St. Paul Cathedral in London on tour in 1988.  They are singing Psalm 23 in a historic Dutch church.

This link is a beautiful setting of Psalm 23 by Bobby McFerrin, who wrote this piece in honor of his mother.  For many years it has been sung annually by our choir, either on Good Shepherd Sunday or on Mother’s Day.  The composer has altered the original psalm in order to lift up and celebrate the feminine aspects of God.

Following this week’s theme of Psalm 23,  I’m sharing a link to another one of our choir’s favorite anthems: “The Lord Is My Shepherd” by Howard Goodall, as sung by the Choir of Wells Cathedral in England.  If you are a fan of the British TV comedy, “The Vicar of Dibley”, this will be quite familiar.
